Pregnant Woman’s Miscarriage Sparks Inquiry Into Alleged Hospital Negligence in Jamtara
Dumka: An inquiry has been ordered following allegations that a 25-year-old pregnant woman suffered a miscarriage due to delayed medical treatment at Jamtara Sadar Hospital before being shifted to a private clinic.
According to the woman's family, she was taken to the district Sadar Hospital around 10 pm on Saturday after experiencing heavy abdominal bleeding. The woman, a resident of Kelahi village under Mihijam police station limits, was reportedly admitted to the hospital and allotted a bed, but no doctor attended to her throughout the night.
They further alleged that nursing staff were unable to administer medication or injections without a doctor’s prescription, leaving the patient without critical intervention as her condition deteriorated. By morning, the bleeding had reportedly worsened significantly.
The family claimed that even by 7 am on Sunday, no doctor had arrived, forcing them to shift her to the clinic in Mihijam. There, Doctors reportedly performed an abortion, and her condition was stated to be critical.
Speaking to TOI, Jamtara civil surgeon Dr Shiv Prasad Mishra said an inquiry has been ordered into the incident. “Preliminary investigation suggests that the woman’s family didn’t allow the available male doctor to go ahead with required treatment and were adamant on a female doctor to treat her,” Mishra said, adding that appropriate action would be taken if anyone is found accountable after investigation.
The incident has sparked criticism from local social activists, who blamed the alleged delay in treatment for the miscarriage and questioned the state of healthcare services in the district.
Social activists Aqib Javed Khan and Samanat Marandi criticised the healthcare system in the district and blamed the miscarriage on the alleged delay in treatment.
They questioned the condition of emergency medical services at the Jamtara Sadar hospital and alleged that the facility lacks adequate infrastructure and sufficient doctors despite Jamtara being represented by state health minister Irfan Ansari.
