KGMU to kickstart its kidney transplant programme, once again
Lucknow: After being suspended for nearly a year, the kidney transplant programme at King George's Medical University (KGMU) in Lucknow is now going to get a fresh lease of life, as the institute has decided to give it a kick start again
Medical Dialogues had eralier reported that the first kidney transplantation was conducted by KGMU in 2014, following which it got discontinued because of some unsuccessful cases, and also because of the resignation of a few expert doctors.
In 2022, KGMU once again received permission from the Directorate of Medical Education and Training, to begin a kidney transplant program at the hospital, making it the third such facility in the state at that time. The permission given to conduct the transplant service is for five years, which the DMET granted after conducting an inspection of the place. Be April 2023, five kidney transplants were conducted.

However once again, due to the improper allotment of transplant operating theatre, the programme once again hit a major roadblock.
KGMU Vice Chancellor Prof Soniya Nityanand said arrangements are being made to make the operating theatre available to the transplant unit on a regular basis.
“Two operating schedules have been set aside for kidney transplants. This will help take the kidney transplant programme ahead smoothly,” she said.
