Kidney Transplant Racket: Tamil Nadu Govt seeks disciplinary action against doctors

Chennai: The Tamil Nadu government has initiated legal and disciplinary proceedings against hospitals and doctors allegedly involved in the kidney racket case. The government has filed a petition before the Namakkal district court and has also written to the Tamil Nadu Medical Council (TNMC) seeking disciplinary action against the doctors involved in the case.
Announcing the development on Wednesday, Health Minister KG Arunraj said the government is committed to taking action against all those found to be involved in the alleged kidney racket. He added that the investigation would be carried out impartially and without any political influence.
The minister made the announcement while inaugurating 10-bed Intensive Care Unit (ICU) facilities established in 11 government hospitals through Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) funding from HDFC Bank.
Apart from the kidney racket case, the minister also addressed the rising concern over dengue cases in the state. He urged people to prevent water stagnation around their homes and neighbourhoods, stating that stagnant water remains the primary breeding ground for mosquitoes that spread dengue.
He shared that the state had reported 23,000 dengue cases by July 21 in 2024, which dropped to 11,000 cases during the same period in 2025, while around 9,000 cases have been reported so far this year. According to the minister, the Health Department is continuing preventive measures to further reduce the number of infections.
According to The New Indian Express, the Health Department has also constituted a committee to investigate complaints of excess fee collection by private medical colleges. The minister said appropriate action will be taken against institutions found to have violated the prescribed fee collection norms after the committee submits its report.
