Maj Gen Sanjay Mauraya appointed Commandant of Command Hospital Kolkata

Maj Gen Maurya Takes Charge at Command Hospital
Kolkata: Maj Gen Sanjay Maurya assumed charge as the new Commandant of the prestigious Command Hospital in Kolkata on September 6, 2025.
The ceremonial handover was attended by senior military officials, including Lt Gen RC Tiwari, General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Eastern Command, who formally congratulated Maj Gen Maurya on his appointment.
Command Hospital, located in Alipore, Kolkata, is a premier tertiary care and teaching institution with a legacy dating back to 1870. Originally established as a 60-bed British military facility near the Racecourse, the hospital has evolved into a state-of-the-art medical centre since its relocation and expansion in 1968. It now serves as a critical referral hub, particularly for soldiers requiring advanced surgical and reconstructive care following trauma.

Maj Gen Maurya is a recognised expert in plastic and reconstructive surgery. He has held prestigious appointments of HoD Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery at AFMC Pune and Army Hospital R& R. His academic contributions include a well-regarded 2019 study on the management of war wounds, which addressed the complexities of delayed reconstructive procedures often faced in battlefield medicine. The research emphasised how early life-saving interventions often postpone reconstruction, underlining the importance of timing and specialisation in improving recovery outcomes for injured soldiers.
He has also commanded 92 Base Hospital in an operational area.
Lt Gen Tiwari, who has led the Eastern Command since 2023, emphasized the strategic importance of Command Hospital and expressed confidence in Maj Gen Maurya’s ability to elevate its standards further.
The event, marked by a formal exchange of insignia, reflects the Indian Army’s commitment to maintaining high standards of medical care within its ranks, especially in the face of challenging wartime conditions. Maj Gen Maurya’s leadership is expected to further strengthen the hospital’s role in delivering specialized treatment and training, reports SSB Crack.
