Mumbai: Cama Hospital to offer Urogynaecology Fellowships soon
Mumbai: Bringing good news to the medical professionals interested in research, the Cama and Albless Hospital is soon going to offer fellowships in the young science of urogynaecology.
Already the Taj Public Welfare Trust has donated the required equipment for the urogynaecology department and a Health tech company is sponsoring the ongoing construction under the CSR activity.
With this, Cama Hospital is soon going to be the only government hospital in Maharashtra for having the urogynaecology department and for offering fellowships in it.
Maharashtra Government is working on the process of recruiting and redirecting staff in this department. Dr Aparna Hegde will head the department. She got training in urogynaecology at Cleveland Clinic in Florida, USA.
Urogynecology, also known as Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery, is a sub-specialty of Gynaecology. The doctors specialising in this branch of study helps the patients to manage the clinical problems associated with dysfunction of the pelvic floor and bladder. Apart from these, the Urogynaecologists also provide treatment to women who have experienced trauma to the perineum during childbirth.
Founded back in 1883, Cama and Albless Hospital offers treatment to women and children in Mumbai and it has altogether 367 beds. Since it is the only government hospital in the State having the urogynecology department, the patients are expected to get affordable treatment at this hospital. For instance, Urogynecological and Reconstructive Surgery is an extremely costly operation if done in private hospitals. However, in Cama Hospital, patients can get access to the same facility at a little or no cost at all.
While commenting on this, the Superintendent of the hospital, Dr, Tushar Palve told Hindustan Times, “Cama Hospital has been striving for many years to build this department. As a way to test the need for it, we also started a dedicated OPD for urogynaecology just before the start of the pandemic. After seeing the huge inflow of patients in the hospital, it was decided to set up the department.”
In this regard, he further informed that the Medical Education Minister Girish Mahajan has helped in realisation of the proposal. Providing details regarding the construction work, he mentioned that construction is currently underway on the ground and the first floors of the old radiotherapy building. He informed that CitiusTech Healthcare Technology Private Limited has contributed for the cost of the building construction. Apart from this, Rs 2.3 crores has been donated by Taj Public Services Welfare Trust.
Meanwhile, referring to the urogynaecology department in Cama Hospital, Dr J B Sharma, Chairperson of the Federation of Gynaecological Societies of India (FOGSI) Urogynecology Committee said, “Most of our patients are elderly women with problems like bladder issues, incontinence, prolapse and pelvic floor disorders. They may be a part of normal ageing, but women didn’t even feel comfortable discussing such problems with their doctors.”
"That is the reason it is a discipline that started evolving as a super specialty only twelve years ago," added Dr Sharma who runs the urogynaecology department at All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Delhi.
