NHRC issues notice to Bihar Govt over death of minor rape victim at Govt Hospital

Bihar: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on Monday, took suo motu cognisance of a media report of the death of a nine-year-old girl victim of rape and brutal physical assault died at the Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH), Bihar amid allegations that she was left waiting in an ambulance for several hours before getting a bed to start her treatment.
She was victimized in Muzaffarpur district of the state on 26th May, 2025 and was brought to the hospital in a critical condition on 30th May, 2025.
The Commission has examined that the contents of the news report, if true, raise a serious issue of violation of human rights. Therefore, it has issued notices to the Chief Secretary and the Director General of Police, Bihar, calling for a detailed report in the matter within two weeks.
According to the media report, carried on 1st June, 2025, the same perpetrator had earlier committed the same offence with another 12 year-old-girl and had attempted to kill her.
As per a media report in the TOI, the minor was raped on May 26 at her village in Muzaffarpur and brought to the PMCH on May 31 in a critical condition, an official said.
Reacting to the incident, leader of opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, in a post on X on Sunday, wrote, "The brutality against a minor dalit girl in Muzaffarpur and the subsequent negligence in her treatment is extremely shameful. If she had received timely treatment, her life could have been saved. But the double-engine govt was negligent not only in providing security but also in saving her life. We will not sit quietly until the victim's family gets justice. Strict action should be taken against the culprits and negligent officers.
