Odisha Human Rights Panel seeks report on Patient's death after Sterilisation Surgery

OHRC to Investigate Death of Woman After Sterilisation Surgery in Odisha
Jagatsinghpur: The Odisha Human Rights Commission (OHRC) has launched an investigation into alleged medical negligence that led to the death of a 29-year-old woman following a sterilisation surgery five months ago at SCB Medical College and Hospital (SCBMCH). The commission has directed the Chief District Medical and Public Health Officer (CDM&PHO) of Jagatsinghpur to submit a detailed report by 25 November 2025.

Sources said Kamini Kandi of Mathasahi village within Erasama police limits died in February during treatment at the SCB Medical College and Hospital (SCBMCH), following complications that arose after the sterilisation procedure. The doctors treating her had administered anaesthesia and other medications, after which the woman fell unconscious and developed swelling on her body. She was first referred to Jagatsinghpur district headquarters hospital and later shifted to SCBMCH, where she died, reports TNIE.
After the death of the patient, her body was transported back to her village in a private ambulance. However, no medical personnel were present to ensure proper handling of the body.
Angered by the incident, the local villagers staged protests demanding adequate compensation for the deceased patient’s family and strict action against the doctor involved in the surgery.
The Erasama police had initially registered a case under Section 106 (1) of the BNS. Despite the legal proceedings being initiated, there has been no compensation provided to the victim’s family, and no action has been taken against the doctor responsible for the procedure, even after five months.
