Odisha: Mob ransacks Rourkela hospital after death of accident victim
Rourkela: The JP Hospitals & Research Centre Pvt Ltd in Rourkela was raided and ransacked by a group of people on Tuesday who accused the hospital of medical negligence, which allegedly led to the death of an accident victim.
Around 150 people raided the hospital and smashed some glass doors and panels with helmets, creating a lot of tension. The situation became normal after the Brahmani Tarang police with one platoon force came to the area and controlled the people.
A 19-year-old identified as Chandan Dalei from the STI Chowk slum region got into an accident after his motorbike hit a stationary water tanker on the Hanuman Vatika road on Monday, due to which he received critical injuries.
The police took him to the Rourkela Government Hospital (RGH), however, his family members shifted him to JP Hospital the same evening. The youth passed away at the hospital six hours later after succumbing to his injuries.
Alleging medical negligence, Dalei's relative Anil Mahanandia said that he was taken to the casualty at around 5 pm on Monday, following which no doctors attended him for the next few hours claiming that Dalei's condition was normal. He told the New Indian Express, "Around three hours later, hospital authorities told them the patient was very serious and asked them to provide necessary documents, including an Aadhaar card for admission to Intensive Care Unit (ICU). At around 11 pm, we were told he died."
Meanwhile, the JPH&RCPL managing director Dr Chandan Bansal said that the patient came in a highly critical condition, following which he was treated at the casualty having at par facility of ICU. He said, "The patient’s heart had stopped functioning and with CVR (cardiovascular reactivity) the patient was revived, adding despite six hours of the tireless effort of the medical team the patient could not survive."
Refuting allegations of medical negligence, Dr Bansal said that the patient’s BSKY card was blocked but they began his treatment immediately. Dr Bansal said, "Everything was recorded through the casualty’s surveillance cameras and those can be checked." He requested the Sundargarh district administration to provide a fear-free environment to doctors, para-medics and medical institutions for effective functioning.
The patient's body was handed over to the family after an autopsy on Tuesday. No case have been registered against the people who raided the hospital at the Brahmani Tarang police station. Rourkela SP Mukesh K Bhamoo said that required action would be taken after they receive a written complaint from the hospital management.
