PGI Chandigarh to launch upgraded operation theatres in new critical care block
Chandigarh:The premier health institute, the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGI Chandigarh), has decided to include upgraded operation theatres in the upcoming new critical care block that would treat patients suffering from serious life-threatening diseases.
Currently, the institute is suffering from a shortage of operation theatre tables, due to which the administration decided to launch upgraded operation theatres in the new critical care block. Besides addressing the immediate shortage, it will also improve PGIMER's overall surgical capacity.
Medical Dialogues team had earlier reported that the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGI Chandigarh) plans to establish a 150-bedded exclusive critical care block under PM Ayushman Bharat Health Infrastructure Mission (PM-ABHIM).

The PM-ABHIM is the largest pan-India scheme for strengthening healthcare infrastructure across the country, focusing on primary, secondary and tertiary care services. The major aim of the scheme is to establish a health system that responds effectively to future pandemics/disasters like COVID-19.
Previously, the PGIMER proposed a plan to the centre that there would be around 100 or 150 beds for critical patients and that each speciality department would have a different number of beds allocated for their patients. The approval in this regard was pending.
After the approval of the project, a cost of Rs 120 crore was sanctioned to the institute under PM-ABHIM and construction is expected to start soon at the proposed site near the Advanced Cardiac Centre. Although the estimated cost of this project is Rs 208.92 crore, the remaining funds, amounting to approximately Rs 88.92 crore, will be provided by the PGI through its resources, The Tribune reports.
The centre will be equipped with intensive care units (ICUs) and step-down units so that patients who stabilise can be shifted to other wards. It will be a multi-speciality centre. Separate manpower will be created for the block.
The block will be self-contained and have critical, supportive and ancillary services such as an Emergency area, ICUs, isolation wards/oxygen-supported beds, a surgical unit, two labour, delivery, recovery rooms (LDRs) with one newborn care corner. These blocks/wings will be equipped with medical gas pipeline systems, oxygen generation plants/oxygen supply, air handling units and mechanisms for infection prevention control.
