Chandigarh: In a significant development towards the paediatric patients of the union territory, a six-bed exclusive paediatric bone marrow transplant (BMT) unit is going to be launched soon at the Nehru Hospital of the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGI) Chandigarh.
The confirmation about this came from the institute on Tuesday who also confirmed that the tender for the construction of the paediatric BMT unit has been issued.

A bone marrow transplant is a procedure that infuses healthy blood-forming stem cells into your body to replace bone marrow that's not producing enough healthy blood cells.
PGIMER is a referral centre for several northern states and provides tertiary care and emergency medical, surgical and intensive care services. It is one of the most prestigious medical institutes of national importance.
The Nehru Hospital of the institute provides tertiary care to patients, who come not only from the neighbouring states but also from far-off states like West Bengal and Bihar.
As per a media report in HT, the adult bone marrow transplant services will be under Professor Pankaj Malhotra, while the paediatric bone marrow transplant services will be under Professor Alka Khadwal in Nehru Hospital.
Medical Dialogues team had earlier reported that the premier health institute, the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGI Chandigarh), has decided to include upgraded operation theatres in the upcoming new critical care block that would treat patients suffering from serious life-threatening diseases.
