Pune Civic body plans Rs 90 crore upgrade of 11 municipal health centres
Pune- To strengthen the public healthcare system, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has decided to upgrade 11 municipal health centres into modern general hospitals.
The decision has been taken in view of the city's growing population and the increasing demand for healthcare services. Therefore, the municipal body has decided to upgrade selected facilities into fully equipped general hospitals.
A budget of ₹90 crore has been allocated for this project, as announced by the Standing Committee Chairman Srinath Bhimale in the civic budget.
These hospitals will include six maternity homes and five Outpatient Department (OPD) hospitals. The administration's goal is to equip these facilities with modern infrastructure and advanced medical equipment within the next six months.
The hospitals identified for upgradation include Rajiv Gandhi Hospital (Yerawada), Laigude Hospital (Vadgaon), Sanjay Gandhi Hospital (Bopodi), Dalvi Hospital (Shivajinagar) and Malti Kachi Hospital (Gadikhana) under the general hospital category.
The maternity hospitals slated for upgradation are Sonawane Maternity Hospital (Bhavani Peth), Rajmata Jijau Nursing Home, Dhankawadi Hospital, Shivarkar Hospital (Wanawadi), Sutar Hospital (Kothrud) and Skhedekar Hospital (Bopodi).
According to the MedicalBuyer media report, a joint inspection of the identified centers will be conducted by the PMC's Building and Electrical Departments. Based on the findings of the inspection, a detailed plan will be formulated, encompassing infrastructure improvements, modern medical equipment, electrical systems, and staffing requirements.
The objective of this initiative is to improve access to quality healthcare services for economically weaker and middle-class citizens, who primarily rely on PMC services. At present, Kamala Nehru Hospital is the only major general hospital operated by the PMC.
Currently, the PMC operates 54 OPDs and 19 maternity homes across Maharashtra. These facilities serve approximately 11,000 to 12,000 patients daily. However, many centers face challenges such as inadequate infrastructure, staff shortages, and administrative delays, which limit the quality of care.
