Pune: A private hospital in Pune has launched US FDA-approved Mako Robotic Arm-Assisted Technology to facilitate advanced treatment for patients suffering from knee and hip joint disorders.
The team of surgeons at the Sainath Hospital has already completed 100 surgeries with the system.
Orthopedic Surgeon Dr Suhas Kamble said one of the challenges with conventional surgery is that surgical accuracy mostly depends on the surgeon's experience and technique. With the help of Mako technology, surgeons can replicate exact and precise bone cuts for patients each time, first on a virtual 3D model and then in the operating room.
"Not only is it more accurate, with its haptics technology it also allows less soft tissue injury resulting in comparatively faster recovery for patients. The technology enables us to know more about our patients than before and we are also able to cut less," he said.
Each patient’s bone anatomy is different, and arthritis further tends to alter the diseased joint. In the case of a knee or hip surgery, Mako System’s software helps create a 3D model of the diseased joint based on the patient’s CT scan. The software then allows creating of a personalised virtual surgical plan for each patient, based on their specific disease condition.
The planning, done even before entering the operation theatre, helps in deciding the highly accurate bone cuts and alignment of implants.
The technology allows the surgeon to modify the plan during the surgery if required. And once the plan is locked, the system assists the surgeon in executing the bone cuts in the operation theatre.
Mako robotic platform facilitates partial knee, total knee, and total hip replacement on the same platform.
