Rs 196 crore to boost infrastructure at GMC Patiala

Patiala: With an aim to improve the infrastructure at Patiala's Government Medical College and Rajindra Hospital, the Punjab government have allocated around Rs 196.81 crore for the infrastructural work.
The announcement was made by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, who had come to inaugurate the renovated emergency ward at Rajindra Hospital.
Mann said, "We are providing Rs 4.75 crore for the construction of a sports hall at the Government Medical College. We will build houses for faculty at a cost of Rs 15.58 crore, multi-storey houses for doctors at an expenditure of Rs 17.67 and junior resident hostel at a cost of Rs 13.52 crore."
A trauma centre and residential quarters worth Rs 68 crore would be constructed in the premises, said the CM. Further, he noted that they have increased the bed capacity to 100 at the hospital. A number of patients were sometimes referred to other hospitals during critical conditions, which would reportedly go down with the currently planned infrastructural project.
The government would construct residential quarters worth Rs 76.32 crore for Class III and IV employees, said the CM. He added that they would be setting up a separate ward for jail inmates at the hospital, as per a media report in the Tribune India.
The government is reported to have made an advertisement regarding the hiring of specialist doctors. The Government Medical College, Patiala, is the second-oldest medical college in the state and is affiliated with Baba Farid University of Health Sciences in Faridkot. The 1009-bedded Rajindra Hospital was attached to the college in early 1951.
Meanwhile, the CM also commented on the area of education and said that they are working on providing better education to children. He gave examples of students of a government school who topped Class VIII board exams. Further, he added that the government is also keeping the law and situation in the state under control while commenting on the alerts issued at various jails in the state.
