Sassoon Hospital plans to set up 250-bed Super Specialty Hospital
Pune: In a recent move to enhance healthcare services and address bed shortages in Pune, BJ Medical College (BJMC) and Sassoon General Hospital (SGH) have announced plans to set up a state-of-the-art 250-bed Super Specialty Hospital and Post Graduate Institute. The proposal for the new facility was submitted to the medical education department on Thursday.
The proposed hospital will be located within the SGH campus, covering a vast 31 lakh square feet area spread across 16 stories. The BJMC authorities have expressed a preference for setting up the hospital close to the existing SGH facility.
Dr. Eknath Pawar, Dean of BJMC and SGH, shared details about the hospital's specialized departments, which will include urology, nephrology, gastroenterology, neurology, and others. Each department is expected to have around 20 to 30 beds.

Speaking to Hindustan Times Dr Pawar said, “The departments like neurosurgery, cardio-thoracic surgery, plastic surgery, and pediatric surgery are functioning at full fledge and have around 20 to 30 beds. However, after the Super Specialty Hospital is set up, we will double the bed capacity of the existing specialties running at full fledge,” he said.
Dr Pawar also mentioned that the financial expenses for the project are likely to be shared by the central and state governments, and preference has been given to starting the facility within the SGH campus.
The BJMC and SGH hospital system is already one of the busiest in Pune, with a bed capacity of 1,293, which has been expanded to 1,700. SGH operates 140 ICU beds across several departments, including NICU, MICU, Trauma ICU, PICU, and SICU. The hospital handles a high volume of cases, with as many as 2,500 to 3,000 patients visiting the SGH OPD regularly. Additionally, around 500 minor and major procedures are performed every day.
Dr Yallapa Jadhav, medical superintendent of SGH, said that the hospital has 100 blocks for different departments and 25 medical speciality departments.

Furthermore, Dr Jadhav highlighted that patients from Pune and other districts like Ahilyadevi Nagar, Solapur, Satara, and Sangli rely on SGH for treatment. This vast influx of patients has led to a severe shortage of beds, particularly in the ICU. According to Hindustan Times, Dr Jadav said, “The patients suffer due to shortage of beds, but we are helpless. This will help the needy patients at large”.
