SCB Medical College Hospital to launch 20-bed trauma ICU by April 25
Cuttack: As an interim measure, the management of SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack is set to establish a new 20-bed Trauma ICU in the Department of Surgery, which is expected to become operational by April 25, 2026.
The move follows the directives from the Odisha High Court, which emphasised that the ongoing judicial inquiry into the fire incident that occurred at SCB Medical College and Hospital on March 16 should not cause any hindrance or delay in the restoration of the Trauma Care ICU.
According to a senior official at SCBMCH, the Trauma Care ICU was engulfed in fire and completely gutted during the incident. It has currently been shut down due to an ongoing judicial inquiry, and it will not be possible to reopen it in the near future.
In view of this, a new ICU is being set up on the ground floor of the Surgery Department to provide treatment for trauma patients, according to Edexlive.
Meanwhile, all civil and electrical works for the new 20-bed ICU have been completed by the Roads & Building Division, the General Electricity Department (GED), and WATCO. Officials from these three departments have assured that they will hand it over to SCBMCH on Monday, April 20.
The medical equipment, such as monitors, ventilators, suction systems, and oxygen supply lines, has already been made available by the Odisha State Medical Corporation (OSMC).
“Therefore, medical equipment will be installed once the 'Roads & Building Division' hands over the facility to us. We expect that, following the receipt of the fire safety certificate, we will have the new Trauma Care ICU operational by April 25”, the official added.
Meanwhile, the repair and renovation work on the Trauma Care ICU, which was damaged in the fire incident, will be expedited following the completion of the judicial inquiry. This repair work is expected to take approximately two months.
Currently, patients are receiving treatment in the Orthopaedic and Neurosurgery ICUs.
