SSKM Hospital sports medicine unit gets equipment worth Rs 19 crore
Kolkata: One of the oldest medical institutes in Kolkata, Seth Sukhlal Karnani Memorial (SSKM) Hospital, recently received high-end equipment worth around Rs 19 crore from the state government for the newly set up sports medicine unit of the hospital.
This unit is the first such sports medicine unit in the state, while very few institutes in the county have such a facility. The high-end equipment for the unit includes USG machines with musculoskeletal probe, complete cardiopulmonary stress testing in a metabolic cart, speed, jump and turn analyser, and extremity MRI machines.
Sports medicine is the branch of medicine that deals with not only sports and physical exercise-related injury but also physical fitness and prevention from a sports injury. This department will not only treat sports injuries but will also teach this specialized subject to those medical students interested in pursuing a career in this field, mp reports.
The unit is run by a multidisciplinary team of faculty members, including those from physical medicine and rehabilitation, Orthopaedic and Physiology. The unit is equipped to treat various types of injuries the players often suffer from in the course of the game or during practices.
Medical Dialogues team had earlier reported that CM Mamata Banerjee had inaugurated various new projects at the IPGMER-SSKM Hospital at a cost of Rs 43 crore in January. The facilities include seminar-cum-classroom for the radiotherapy department, 10 ICU beds at the Otorhinolaryngology and Head and Neck Surgery (IOHNS) department, Hyper acute stroke unit, 5 floors of the 10-storeyed OPD building, a gangway connecting the OPD building and the Emergency Ward at the SSKM among others. During the inauguration ceremony at the IPGME&R and SSKM Hospital, the Minister said the junior doctors should render their services to the poor patients in remote rural places for three to four days every week.
