Tamil Nadu: Fire erupts at Ramanathapuram Govt Medical College Hospital, no casualties reported
Ramanathapuram: In an unfortunate incident, a fire broke out at the abandoned operation theatre at the old maternity ward of Ramanathapuram Government Medical College Hospital. However, no casualties have been reported.
It was reported that the fire broke out due to an electrical short-circuit at 3 pm, and the hospital staff handled the situation quickly, which stopped the fire from spreading into other nearby wards. Since the ward was abandoned, there were no patients in the ward.
The indoor unit of an air-conditioner was damaged by the fire. After shifting the operation theatre to another building, the hospital authorities had left this operation theatre locked with some furniture inside.

Resident Medical Officer A. Krishnamoorthi told The Hindu, "We had fixed a smoke detector alarm inside the operation theatre, and it went off. Our staff acted quickly and doused the fire. As a precautionary measure, patients were shifted and their attendants from the nearby paediatric ward to a safe place. After Fire and Rescue Services personnel ensured that there was no more danger possible, we have brought back the patients to the paediatric ward."
Medical Dialogues team had earlier reported that 12 infants kept on ventilator support in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) had been rescued unhurt from the fire that broke out at District Women Hospital's special newborn care unit in Amravati city.
Officials said the incident occurred around 11 am at the District Women Hospital in Amravati city in eastern Maharashtra.
At the time of the incident, the unit had 37 newborn children, more than its capacity of 25. Twelve newborns on ventilator support had been rescued later, and the remaining 25 infants were shifted to other hospital wards.
