Upa Lokayukta's surprise inspection flags irregularities at Belagavi Hospitals
Belagavi: Hospitals in Belagavi’s Chikodi came under scrutiny on Thursday after Upa Lokayukta Justice B Veerappa conducted surprise inspections and flagged several irregularities, including staff attendance issues, deficiencies in hospital management and concerns over the availability of medicines.
Justice Veerappa began his two-day tour of Belagavi district by visiting the Mother & Child Hospital, taluk hospital, town municipal council and KSRTC bus station to review public service delivery and interact with citizens.

According to the news reports, at the Mother & Child Hospital, he examined attendance registers and expressed displeasure over reports of some doctors and staff arriving late. He also found instances where staff had reportedly signed the attendance register despite being absent from duty.
He inspected the medicine storage unit and directed the staff to maintain cleanliness and ensure that medicines were properly organised.
During the interaction with new mothers, he sought feedback on the healthcare services and facilities being provided at the hospital. He also observed deficiencies in management and expressed concern over pregnant women being referred to private hospitals and scan centres for various tests.
At the taluk hospital, Justice Veerappa directed authorities to set up separate medicine distribution counters for men, women and persons with disabilities to improve convenience for patients.
According to TOI, he objected to patients not receiving all prescribed medicines and took serious note of complaints regarding expired medicines being dispensed.
Interactions with patients at the hospital further brought to light concerns regarding the overall management and delivery of healthcare services.
Medical Dialogues had previously reported that, in a move to ensure the safety and quality of blood supply across Maharashtra, the state health department has directed district blood transfusion officers to conduct comprehensive inspections of all blood banks. The inspection reports are expected to be submitted within a month.
