Video: Coma patient walks out of ICU with urine bag in hand, claims hospital detained him
Ratlam: In a shocking incident, a man who was allegedly in a coma at a private hospital in Madhya Pradesh was seen walking out of the facility, with medical tapes from IV drips still attached to his hand and chest, and holding a urine bottle. The incident, which has since gone viral, shows the man in good health, contradicting the hospital's claim that he was unconscious and in a critical condition.
The man in the video accused the hospital of fraud. He claimed that the hospital charged his family Rs 1 lakh for what he described as unnecessary and fraudulent treatment. Despite being declared unconscious and in a coma in the ICU, he walked out of the room looking perfectly fine, showing no signs of a critical condition, as shown in the viral video.
According to the man's statements in the video, five hospital staff members had forcibly restrained him and pressured his family into paying for the treatment. Taking advantage of a moment when staff were distracted, he managed to escape from the ICU and ran outside.
His wife and family, belonging to a poor financial background, accused the hospital of fraud. They claimed that the hospital informed them he had suffered a spinal fracture, which led to a coma, and provided them with several prescriptions for medicines and injections before demanding Rs 1 lakh for treatment. However, they stated that he was completely fine and there were no signs of him being in a coma.
As per a Free Press Journal news report, the patient, identified as Banti Ninama, a resident of Deendayal Nagar, had been admitted after sustaining injuries in a fight. His family was initially told that he had a severe spinal fracture and required urgent treatment. Fearing for his life, they scrambled to arrange the money, borrowing from friends and relatives.
The alleged scam came to light when Banti started screaming. Worried, his wife checked on him, and through the ICU’s small glass window, she was shocked to see five people restraining his husband. She saw that Banti was conscious and holding a pair of scissors, threatening to attack. It was only then that the staff let him go.
After escaping the ICU, the patient ran outside, where the public gathered around to listen to his ordeal as they were confused to see him in that state with medical tapes attached to his body and he was half naked. Someone from the crowd started recording the scenes as Banti went on to share the horrific experience at the hospital.
The family has called it a case of extortion. Meanwhile, doctors from the medical college later confirmed that Banti was never in a coma—he was fully conscious and undergoing treatment.
Confirming the ordeal, his wife and mother said, “They told us he had a spinal fracture and had fallen into a coma. They handed us prescriptions, and we bought everything they asked for. Then, they told us to pay Rs 1 lakh for the treatment. We had to beg our relatives for money. We ran from one place to another and finally managed to gather the amount.”
The viral video has sparked outrage on social media, with many questioning how such incidents occur in private hospitals meant to provide proper care. Further, they demanded strict rules and actions to protect patients and their families from such incidents.
