Wenlock Hospital set for Rs 100 crore infrastructure push, says Minister U T Khader

Wenlock District Hospital in Mangaluru is set for over Rs 100 crore in development works, including a Rs 70 crore new OPD block, with the Karnataka government aiming to transform it into a model tertiary care hospital within two years.
Mangaluru: A major infrastructure push is set to transform Wenlock District Hospital into a model tertiary care facility, with Karnataka Health and Family Welfare Minister U.T. Khader announcing development works worth more than Rs 100 crore at the hospital.
The facility is expected to provide more citizen-friendly healthcare services within the next two years.
Speaking at the district-level Independence Day programme at Nehru Maidan in Mangaluru on August 15, Khader, who is also the Dakshina Kannada district in-charge Minister, said the government was committed to upgrading Wenlock Hospital. Among the planned projects is the construction of a new outpatient department (OPD) block at an estimated cost of Rs 70 crore.
The minister said the ongoing and proposed infrastructure works are aimed at strengthening Wenlock Hospital as a model district tertiary care hospital. The development is expected to improve the hospital's capacity to provide healthcare services to the public, reports The Hindu.
Khader also highlighted the government's efforts to expand access to specialised healthcare services through collaboration with private hospitals. Under this initiative, three private hospitals have already started providing specialised services at Bantwal Taluk Hospital, Moodbidri Community Health Centre (CHC) and Vitla CHC.
In addition to healthcare infrastructure, the minister spoke about the RISE (Refuse, Inform, Support, and Empower) Karnataka campaign aimed at addressing drug abuse and drug peddling.
During the Independence Day programme, the minister also felicitated the family members of Irene D’Souza, 63, whose eyes were donated after she was declared brain dead following an accident in February 2026.
Medical Dialogues had earlier reported that a major Ayurveda infrastructure project has been initiated at Sri Kshetra Gejjegiri in Nandanabittil, Karnataka, with an estimated investment of Rs 7 crore aimed at preserving traditional herbal medicine practices while developing healthcare, education and research facilities.
