Woman dies after childbirth complications at Bundi District Hospital, family protests

Kota: Allegations of medical negligence have surfaced following the death of a 25-year-old pregnant woman within hours of normal delivery after developing medical complications at Bundi District Government Hospital on Sunday morning.

The deceased was identified as a resident of Dhanatri village. The doctor said that the woman was admitted to the hospital on Friday.

According to the PTI report, Principal Medical Officer (PMO) Dr LN Meena, however, refuted allegations of negligence, saying that despite their efforts, the woman could not be revived.

Dr Meena said the woman was initially advised a surgical delivery due to obstructed labour, but after the family requested a normal delivery, her treatment was proceeded accordingly.

The woman delivered her child around 11 am but shortly after, both the mother and newborn showed signs of rapid deterioration. Within an hour, she complained of severe chest pain and collapsed as her condition turned critical, the doctor said.

Her cause of death is suspected to be amniotic fluid embolism, a rare and fatal medical emergency. It happens when amniotic fluid or fetal cells enter the mother’s blood, leading to pulmonary complications, sudden collapse, and heart failure, acting PMO Govind Gupta said, reports PTI.

The newborn, on the other hand, was referred to Kota’s JK Lone Hospital.

Following the incident, the hospital administration immediately transferred all of the labour room nursing and support staff who were on duty at the time.

A formal inquiry has also been ordered, while a mandatory maternal death audit involving three gynaecologists will be conducted to establish the exact sequence of events, two hospital officials said.

However, the deceased's family members and villagers created a ruckus on the hospital premises, alleging negligence, and halted the ambulance carrying her body to the mortuary.

Senior officials and cops rushed to the spot and tried to convince the family members to allow a fair investigation into the matter.

Following the completion of a post-mortem in the presence of administrative officials, the body was handed over to the family and transported home in the ambulance.
