Woman dies weeks after C-section at Odisha Hospital, family alleges medical negligence

Bargarh- A woman died nearly a month after undergoing a Caesarean delivery at a private hospital in Odisha's Bargarh district, following which her husband alleged that medical negligence during the surgery led to her death.
The deceased woman has been identified as Srishti Prabha Pradhan, a resident of Hatisar village in the Bhatli block of Bargarh. She was admitted to Purohit General Hospital in Bargarh town on May 13 for delivery and gave birth to a baby boy the same day.
Her husband, Purna Chandra Sahu, a constable from Hatisar village, alleged that doctors accidentally cut her urinary bladder during the surgery, which led to excessive bleeding and serious complications.
He further claimed that the family was not informed about the injury. Instead, they were asked to arrange blood for a transfusion before the patient was referred to VIMSAR, Burla.
After being shifted to VIMSAR, the doctors reportedly informed the family that an infection had developed in the uterus after the bladder was cut and connected to it. Despite treatment at VIMSAR, Srishti's condition deteriorated.
She was further shifted to Vikas Hospital in Sambalpur, where she remained in the ICU from May 14 to June 5. Later, she was also taken to Apollo Hospital in Bhubaneswar, where she passed away on June 8 after a 26-day battle for her life.
Following the death, family members and locals staged a protest outside Purohit General Hospital and demanded strict action against the surgeon and the hospital staff. They alleged that the death was caused by negligence during the Caesarean procedure. The woman's family has demanded an impartial investigation into her death and adequate compensation, as reported by Pragativadi.
On the other hand, the hospital owner dismissed the allegations of medical negligence. Describing the woman's death as unfortunate, he stated that the patient's condition had stabilized after the surgery, her family was kept informed at every stage, and she was subsequently referred to VIMSAR, Burla, in accordance with established medical protocols.
Police have registered a case at the Bargarh Town police station and launched an investigation into the allegations.
