Madurai AIIMS President: TN Doctors association urges Health Ministry to appoint senior doctor from the state
Madurai: Days after the union government appointed Dr Prashanth Lavania from Uttar Pradesh as the new president of the newly sanctioned All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Madurai, the Service Doctors and Post Graduates Association (SDPGA) urged the Union Health Minister to carry forward the previously followed practice of posting a senior doctor from Tamil Nadu after consulting with the state government as the new AIIMS president.
The Service Doctors and Post Graduates Association (SDPGA) is a professional body of Tamil Nadu government doctors which was formed in 2015, who work with the self-stated objective of upgrading the health care delivery system of the Tamil Nadu Government by addressing the welfare of both the service doctors and the patients.

The newly appointed Dr Lavania is a professor at the Department of Surgery, Sarojini Naidu Medical College, Agra, Uttar Pradesh.
The president of SDPGA, P Saminathan, wrote a letter to the Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya, in which he stated that the Tamil Nadu government has given a land for the construction of AIIMS Madurai, as per a media report in the Hindu. He further added that coordination with the state government and the people is necessary for the successful functioning of a health institution for the welfare of the people.
Medical Dialogues team had earlier reported about a tussle in the Lok Sabha over the work of All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Madurai. The DMK (Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam) and Congress Lok Sabha MPs had staged a walkout from the parliament after they became angry at the alleged statement and allegations made by the Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya over the delay in the construction of Madurai AIIMS. On one hand, the DMK members alleged that AIIMS Madurai was not ready, and on the other, Mandaviya accused them of giving wrong information to the House and misleading the people.
