Patient Suffers from Post-Delivery Complications: Consumer Court Directs Doctor to Cough Up Rs 20 Lakh
Umerkote: Holding a Chhattisgarh-based doctor guilty of medical negligence, which allegedly led to post-delivery complications in a patient, the District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission, Nabarangpur, Odisha, has recently directed the doctor to compensate the patient.
As per the District Consumer Court's order, the doctor will have to pay Rs 20 lakh as compensation within a period of 30 days.
The case concerned a woman hailing from Umerkote, who after developing labour pain had been admitted to the nursing home of the treating doctor back on January 25, 2021.
After delivering the baby, the patient got discharged from the nursing home on January 27. At the time of discharge, she had allegedly complained to the doctor about severe post-delivery complications.
Following this, the husband of the patient had taken her to the doctor again after three days i.e. on January 31. When the patient complained of pain during the passing of stool and discharge of stool from the vagina, the doctor allegedly advised a blood transfusion.
However, after the condition of the patient got more critical, the treating doctor advised the husband of the patient to admit her to some other hospital. Getting a discharge from the nursing home, the patient had been taken to a Visakhapatnam-based hospital, where the doctors upon conducting MRI found out that the private parts of the woman had been severally damaged due to unskillful handling, adds New Indian Express.
Consequently, a surgery had be performed on the patient and after the six-hour-long surgery, the patient had been kept in the ICU. After one month of the operation, another operation had to be conducted on her and the treatment cost was very high.
Even though the husband of the patient first had approached the treating doctor, he denied entertaining them and as a result, the patient aproached the District Consumer Court and alleged medical negligence. She claimed a compensation of Rs 24 lakhs for medical expenses, damage, transportation and other causes.
Advocate KTS Zillani of Umerkote had represented the complainant.
After perusing all the details related to the case, the Consumer Court directed the doctor to cough up an amount of Rs 20 lakhs as compensation within a period of 30 days.
