NBE Notifies on Nomenclature Amendment of DNB Cardio Thoracic Surgery to DrNB Cardio Vascular Thoracic Surgery, details
New Delhi: Through a recent notice, the National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS) has notified about the amendment in the nomenclature of the Diplomate National Board (DNB) Cardio-Thoracic Surgery.
NBE has amended the nomenclature of the above-mentioned qualification as Doctorate National Board (Cardio Vascular & Thoracic Surgery). Accordingly, the abbreviation has also changed from DNB Cardio-Thoracic Surgery to DrNB Cardio Vascular & Thoracic Surgery.
The natboard took this decision after consulting the matter with the National Medical Commission (NMC), the Apex Medical Regulator, and after obtaining permission from the Union Government.
"The qualification with nomenclature of Diplomate National Board (Cardio Thoracic Surgery): DNB (Cardio Thoracic Surgery) awarded on or after August 1982 by the National Board of Examinations was inserted as a recognized qualification in the First schedule of the Indian Medical Council Act, 1956 and notified in the Gazette of India vide notifications dated 19th September 1983," NBE mentioned in the notice dated 24.04.2024.
Issuing clarification regarding the amended nomenclature of the qualification, NBE further added,
"In exercise of the power conferred by sub-section (1) of section 37 of the National Medical Commission Act, 2019, the National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences, after consulting the National Medical Commission and with the approval of Government of India, amended the Nomenclature and Abbreviation of above said qualification as Doctorate National Board (Cardio Vascular & Thoracic Surgery): DrNB (Cardio Vascular & Thoracic Surgery). This qualification is a recognised medical qualification when granted by National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences, New Delhi on or after August 2020."
"It is for information of all concerned that candidates conferred with DNB (Cardio Thoracic Surgery) & with DrNB (Cardio Vascular & Thoracic Surgery) are both trained & examined in various components of the sub-specialty as per the curriculum prescribed including component of vascular surgery," it further mentioned.
DrNB Cardio Vascular And Thoracic Surgery is a super specialty level course for doctors in India that is done by them after completion of their postgraduate medical degree course. The duration of this super specialty course is 3 years, and it focuses on the study of surgical procedures of the heart, lungs, esophagus, and other organs in the chest. The course is a full-time course pursued at various accredited institutes/hospitals across the country. Candidates can get admitted to this course after clearing the NEET-SS entrance exam conducted by NBE, followed by counselling based on the scores of the exam that conducted by DGHS/MCC/State Authorities.
