Puducherry Govt doctor arrested for allegedly cheating ANM of Rs 1 Crore
Puducherry: A government doctor has been arrested by the Puducherry police on allegations of duping an auxiliary nurse midwife (ANM) of Rs. 1 crore and misappropriating six sovereigns of gold jewellery.
The complainant, who works at a government primary health centre at Ariankuppam, alleged that she entered into a financial arrangement after the doctor posted at Indira Gandhi Government General Hospital and Postgraduate Institute assured her that he would sell a plot of land located within the town limits. Trusting his assurance, she reportedly transferred large sums of money and handed over gold jewellery, but the promised property transaction failed to materialise.
According to the Times of India, the complainant stated that she transferred ₹1 crore in three online instalments in July 2024 to the bank account of the doctor’s wife. She also alleged that the doctor had earlier taken six sovereigns of gold jewellery from her in July 2023, which were neither returned nor accounted for.
The Daily also reported that the complainant and her husband made repeated visits to the doctor’s residence and clinic, seeking repayment of the money and recovery of the jewellery. During their final interaction, the complainant alleged that the doctor abused and harassed her, prompting her to file a police complaint.
Based on her complaint, the Ariankuppam police registered a case under Sections 79 (insulting the modesty of a woman), 318(2) (cheating) and 351(2) (criminal intimidation) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The doctor was subsequently arrested and remanded to judicial custody.
Medical Dialogues had earlier reported a similar case in which a young woman doctor was allegedly defrauded of Rs 2.09 lakh by cybercriminals who impersonated bank officials and claimed they needed to update her credit card details. After realising she had been cheated, the doctor approached the police and lodged a formal complaint.
