RG Kar Financial Irregularities Case: Court Reprimands CBI for Failing to Provide Documents

Kolkata: A special CBI court in Kolkata recently warned the counsel of the former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, Sandip Ghosh, against making informal accusatory statements against the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) during court proceedings. The court reprimanded the CBI for delays in submitting all relevant documents related to the case.
During the hearing on Monday, a courtroom clash unfolded after Ghosh's counsel accused the Central Bureau of Investigation of not providing all necessary documents related to the chargesheet in alleged financial irregularities at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital during Ghosh's tenure.
His counsel, Joseph Rauf, alleged that the investigating agency had withheld crucial records. However, CBI dismissed the allegations with its counsel alleging that only Ghosh’s defence team had raised objections and no one else had complained.

In a submission before the trial court, Ghosh’s counsel Joseph Rauf said, “The CBI is always misguiding and misrepresenting the court. They have to give all the documents and statements of the witnesses. They haven’t done that. Documents that were filed here on the first day were 70%. But the next day, the CBI said all the documents had been given.”
“Why does the CBI suppress material facts? Some registers were not given. The CBI should be issued a show-cause notice. The CBI has not given copies. It has suppressed our emails,” the lawyer told the court.
In response to the accusations, the counsel for CBI stated, "He is the only one having problems. No one else has had problems. We will provide the documents."
Hearing arguments on both sides, the court reprimanded Ghosh’s counsel, by saying, “We’re not here to see faults of either side… This isn’t a political platform where you can raise your voice. You cannot talk like this against an agency. Give in writing.”
Following this, the judge then reprimanded the CBI and said, “Where are your scanned copies? If the scanned copy is ready with you, provide it right now. Ask your representative (CBI) to bring the documents."
Further, the court directed the agency to immediately provide all missing documents. The court instructed the agency to ensure that all deficient documents were handed over to the accused’s legal team via email and a pen drive by 4 PM on Monday, the Indian Express reports.
Medical Dialogues had earlier reported that the Calcutta High Court granted Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, seven days to review the documents submitted by the CBI as part of the chargesheet in a case of financial irregularities during his tenure.
Sandip Ghosh was the principal of the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital when a medic was raped and murdered inside its seminar room on August 9 last year, triggering outrage across the country.
