TMC MP booked over alleged irregularities at Sebashraay Health Camp

Medical Negligence
Kolkata: An FIR has been registered against a Trinamool Congress (TMC) national general secretary and Diamond Harbour MP over allegations of medical negligence and cheating in connection with a Sebashraay health camp.
The FIR stems from a complaint filed by a man who alleged that his wife lost a leg following treatment that began at one of the Sebashraay camps. According to the complaint, a local TMC councillor advised the family to attend the free medical camp after the woman experienced persistent pain in her leg.
The complainant alleged that although medicines were prescribed, her condition failed to improve. He further claimed that the doctors who examined patients did not appear to be experienced specialists. After multiple visits to the camp, the woman was referred to a government hospital for surgery. reports The Daily.
According to the complaint, she was first taken to MR Bangur Hospital and was subsequently admitted to the state-run Calcutta National Medical College and Hospital on March 19, where she underwent total knee replacement surgery on April 25, 2026.
The woman's husband further alleged that she developed an acute post-operative vascular complication in her right leg, following which doctors performed an above-knee amputation on May 27.
Police sources indicate that at least three similar FIRs have been filed by other individuals raising concerns about the functioning of the Sebashraay camps.
One complainant alleged that local political workers associated with TMC leader Jahangir Khan in Falta compelled villagers to attend the camps. Another patient reportedly claimed that despite undergoing several medical tests, diagnostic reports were never provided, raising further questions about the quality and transparency of the programme.
The allegations have also drawn reactions from sections of the medical fraternity. Several senior government doctors have reportedly alleged that they were pressured to send junior doctors and medical students to staff the camps while they were presented as specialists. These claims have not been independently verified and form part of the ongoing investigation.
Speaking to PTI, a BJP leader from Diamond Harbour, who assisted the family in filing the complaint at the Rabindranagar Police Station, said the state government is taking the matter seriously. “The health minister understood the gravity of the complaint and has asked the woman and her family to visit Swasthya Bhavan with relevant papers. He has spoken to her over the phone and collected information about how she was treated,” he said.
TMC national general secretary had been heard during a public campaign threatening the BJP workers with dire consequences after they returned to power post May 4, when the results would come out. “Mamata Banerjee is compassionate … so she plays Rabindra Sangeet… but I am not … we will play DJ along with Rabindra Sangeet after election results are out on May 4,” he said, according to the Daily Pioneer report.
