CDSCO, Drug Officials Intensify Inspections in TN Over Alleged Rabbit Blood Hair Oil Sales

Combaitore: The Central Drugs Standard Control Organization (CDSCO) and Tamil Nadu Drugs Control Department have intensified inspections at hair oil and cosmetics manufacturing units in Coimbatore and warehouses of online platforms following complaints about the sale of hair oil allegedly mixed with rabbit blood in Gobichettipalayam, Erode district.
Based on complaints received in December 2024, CDSCO and drug control officers inspected three locations, two at Zamin Kottampatti and one at Kammalapatti near Pollachi in Coimbatore district. They also conducted an inquiry at the warehouse of a major e-commerce firm in Orattukuppai village. However, no evidence of rabbit blood hair oil manufacturing was found during these inspections, sources told The New Indian Expree.
In light of the complaint from Erode, authorities have resumed inspections across Coimbatore. “We will continue the investigation to curb such practices. Social media platforms promoting these products are also being monitored. People should be cautious before using such items as they are not scientifically approved. Strict legal action will be taken against anyone involved in such activities,” stated S. Marimuthu, Assistant Director of Drug Control, Coimbatore zone.

The claim that rabbit blood hair oil has antibacterial and antifungal properties beneficial for dandruff and scalp infections is not scientifically validated, and the product does not have approval under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act. Cosmetic products are approved by CDSCO only if they meet Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) guidelines.
There are 20 cosmetic manufacturers in Coimbatore district, all of whom have been warned against engaging in the production of such hair oil. “Manufacturers must obtain a license from the director of drug control through offline application to produce any cosmetic item,” Marimuthu told TNIE.
