The GST Council, chaired by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and comprising state ministers, on June 12, had slashed tax rate on COVID drugs such as Remdesivir and Tocilizumab as well as on medical oxygen, oxygen concentrators and other COVID essentials, as per PTI report.
The Medical Dialogues team had reported earlier that the Council in its meeting decided to reduce the GST rates on the specified items being used in Covid-19 relief and management till 30th September 2021.
Among the significant tax reductions, the GST Council cut the tax rate from 12% to 5% on medical grade oxygen, oxygen concentrators, ventilators, BiPAP machines and high flow nasal cannula (HFNC) devices. While GST on black fungus or mucormycosis drugs like Tocilizumab and Amphotericin B was slashed to nil from 5 per cent, the rate on Remdesivir and anti-coagulants like Heparin was lowered from 12 per cent to 5 per cent.
The Council also decided to cut the GST rate on ambulances to 12 per cent from 28 per cent.
Further, tax on COVID testing kits, pulse oximeters (including personal imports) has been brought down to 5 per cent from 12 per cent. Hand sanitisers, temperature check equipment, gas/electric furnaces for crematoriums too will attract a lower 5 per cent tax, from 18 per cent earlier.
