Maharashtra FDA Warns Against Three Cosmetics After Mercury, Lead Levels Exceed Safety Limits
Mumbai: The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a public health warning against the use of three cosmetic products after laboratory tests found dangerously high levels of mercury and lead, far exceeding the permissible safety limits. The regulator has cautioned that prolonged use of these products could pose serious health risks, including damage to the kidneys and nervous system.
The three products identified by the FDA are Goree Beauty Cream, Face Fresh Gold (Beauty Cream + Beauty Serum) and Golden Star Beauty Cream. The products have been declared "Not of Standard Quality (NSQ)" after laboratory analysis detected excessive quantities of the toxic heavy metals mercury and lead. While Goree Beauty Cream is allegedly manufactured in Pakistan, the other two products were also found to contain unsafe levels of the contaminants.
Following the findings, the Maharashtra FDA has directed manufacturers, importers, distributors, wholesalers, retailers and e-commerce platforms to immediately stop the sale, distribution and stocking of the three cosmetic products. Businesses have also been instructed to recall the products from the market and submit details of the recalled stock as well as any remaining inventory to the FDA. The regulator has urged consumers to immediately discontinue using, purchasing or distributing these products.
According to health experts, mercury is sometimes illegally added to skin-lightening creams because it suppresses melanin production, giving the appearance of fairer skin. However, repeated exposure allows the metal to be absorbed through the skin, where it accumulates in the body and can lead to kidney disease, nervous system damage, skin disorders and other serious health complications. Lead exposure is also associated with multiple adverse health effects, particularly following prolonged use. Experts further cautioned that the use of unregulated chemicals, poor hygiene during manufacturing and unsuitable storage conditions can increase the health risks associated with such cosmetic products.
The issue gained wider public attention after entrepreneur Chirag Barjatya shared a social media post highlighting the FDA's warning and urging consumers to avoid the affected products. The post further amplified awareness regarding the potential dangers posed by cosmetics containing excessive levels of heavy metals.
The FDA's action underscores growing concerns over the availability of unregulated cosmetic products in the market and the need for stricter monitoring of imported and illegally sold skincare products. The regulator reiterated that consumers should purchase cosmetics only from authorised sources and avoid products that do not comply with prescribed quality and safety standards.
