NPPA to set Ceiling prices of specified nicotine dose forms, seeks data from marketers

New Delhi: Through a recent notification, the National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority (NPPA), under the Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers, has asked all the concerned manufacturers and marketing companies of nicotine mouth dissolving strips, tablets, and oral inhalers having strengths of 2 mg and 4 mg to provide the Price to Retailer (PTR) and moving annual turnover (MAT) in value terms for the month of October 2023.
This came in order to establish ceiling prices for scheduled formulations of nicotine (for nicotine replacement therapy) mouth dissolving strips, tablets, and oral inhalers having strengths of 2 mg and 4 mg under Revised Schedule I (NLEM 2022) of DPCO, 2013 notified vide S.0. No. 5249(E) dated 11.11.2022.
The notice further added that the information may be furnished positively within 7 days from the issue of the office memorandum (O.M.) for taking appropriate action for fixing ceiling prices pursuant to the issue of Revised Schedule-I of DPCO, 2013.
Nicotine replacement therapy is a treatment to help people stop smoking. It uses products that supply low doses of nicotine. These products do not contain the other toxins found in smoke. The goal of therapy is to cut down on cravings for nicotine and ease the symptoms of nicotine withdrawal.
Earlier, the Medical Dialogues Team had reported the inclusion of nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) into the National List of Essential Medicines (NLEM) 2022.Furthermore, the Medical Dialogues Team had reported that the National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority (NPPA) fixed the ceiling price of nicotine (for nicotine replacement therapy) oral dose forms (2 mg pastilles) at 7.12 per pastilles and (4 mg pastilles) at 7.83 per pastilles.

In continuation, the recent notice stated, "All the concerned manufacturers and marketing companies of Nicotine (for nicotine replacement therapy) mouth dissolving strips, tablets, and oral inhalers having strengths of 2 mg and 4 mg are hereby requested to furnish the Price to Retailer (PTR) and Moving Annual Turnover (MAT) in value terms for the month of October 2023 in the format given in Table 1."Table 1
