Six Pharma Suppliers Blacklisted in Five Years for Failing Quality Standards: MoS Anupriya Patel
New Delhi: Over the last five years, six pharmaceutical suppliers have been blacklisted for providing substandard medicines to Jan Aushadhi Kendras under the Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Janaushadhi Pariyojana (PMBJP).
This revelation came during a recent Lok Sabha session, where Adv Dean Kuriakose, Charanjit Singh Channi, Benny Behanan raised concerns over the supply chain and quality assurance in these government-run generic medicine outlets.
In response to the parliamentary question, Anupriya Patel, Minister of State in the Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilisers, confirmed that the Pharmaceuticals & Medical Devices Bureau of India (PMBI), the implementing agency for PMBJP, maintains a strict selection and quality control process for suppliers.
The Minister outlined that six suppliers, including ANG Lifescience India Ltd., Combitic Global Caplet Pvt. Ltd., Ridley Life Science Pvt. Ltd., Kamal Healthcare Products (P) Ltd., Cosmos Research Lab Ltd., and Athens Life Sciences, were blacklisted for failing to meet quality standards.
Under PMBJP, 10,404 Jan Aushadhi Kendras (JAKs) have been established across India from FY 2019-20 to 2024-25 (till October 2024).
Addressing the query regarding the criteria and selection process adopted by the Government to approve and empanel suppliers for JanAushadhi Kendras, including quality and compliance standards, Patel informed that as of now, 206 pharmaceutical manufacturers are associated with the Pharmaceuticals & Medical Devices Bureau of India (PMBI), the implementation agency of PMBJP for supplies of medicines, surgical equipment, nutraceuticals, and ayurvedic products.
“To ensure the quality of products, Pharmaceuticals & Medical Devices Bureau of India (PMBI) procures medicines only from World Health Organization – Good Manufacturing Practices (WHO-GMP) certified suppliers. Each batch of drugs is tested at laboratories accredited by the National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories (NABL),” Patel said in her response.
The Minister assured that the medicines are dispatched to Jan Aushadhi Kendras after passing the quality tests. Additionally, the Minister informed that the procurement of products under PMBJP is done at the centralized level through an open tendering process, using the Central Public Procurement Portal (CPPP) of NIC for rate contracts.
