Sexual dissatisfaction highly prevalent in hip OA patients
A recent study published in International Journal of Rheumatic Diseases has shed light on the decreased level of sexual activity and satisfaction levels among individuals suffering from symptomatic hip osteoarthritis (OA). This study by kai Fu and team aimed to evaluate sexual activity and identify factors associated with sexual satisfaction in individuals with hip OA.
Out of the 282 participants initially registered on the study website, 252 met the inclusion criteria, and 152 of them (60.3%) completed the sexual activity questionnaires. Surprisingly, the study revealed that hip OA interfered with sexual activity in a staggering 70.0% of the participants. This finding underscores the significant impact of hip OA on the sexual lives of affected individuals.
The study also identified key factors associated with sexual satisfaction. High confidence in completing sexual activity was linked to an increased prevalence ratio of sexual satisfaction (PR: 0.53, 95% CI: 0.36 to 0.77), suggesting that self-assurance plays a crucial role in maintaining sexual satisfaction.
On the other hand, high levels of anxiety, depression, or stress during sexual activity were associated with an increased prevalence ratio of sexual dissatisfaction (PR: 1.33, 95% CI: 1.10 to 1.60), even after adjusting for hip pain level and perceived partner's orgasm.
These findings emphasize the need for healthcare professionals to address sexual issues in individuals with hip OA. By acknowledging the impact of this condition on sexual activity and satisfaction, clinicians can provide more comprehensive care and support to their patients. Taking psychological factors into account during the treatment and management of hip OA may help improve sexual functioning and overall quality of life.
While a significant proportion of individuals with hip OA remain sexually active, this study highlights the considerable dissatisfaction experienced by a substantial number of patients. By recognizing the interference of hip OA with sexual activity and addressing psychological factors, healthcare providers can play a vital role in enhancing the sexual well-being and overall quality of life for individuals living with this condition.
