Pollution board inspects 170 Hospitals; 91 found violating Bio Medical Waste Management Rules
Out of 170 hospitals, 78 hospitals were found complying the provisions of the Bio-Medical Waste Management Rules, 2016, 91 hospitals were found violating the rules and one was found closed.
Patiala: As many as 35 Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB) teams conducted surprise inspections of 170 hospitals in the state recently.
The inspections were carried out on the directions of PPCB Chairman S S Marwaha to check compliance status of the provisions of the Bio-Medical Waste Management Rules, 2016 made by the hospitals in Punjab, an official release said here on Thursday.

Out of 170 hospitals, 78 hospitals were found complying the provisions of the Bio-Medical Waste Management Rules, 2016, 91 hospitals were found violating the rules and one was found closed.
Recently, in a major penalty, the Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) directed a small dental clinic situated in the south Delhi area to pay a penalty of Rs 14.30 Lakh on account of operating without obtaining/ applying for mandatory Authorization under Bio-Medical Waste Management Rules, 2016.
The letter written by the DPCC to the clinic noted that under the law it is mandatory for all healthcare facilities to get registered and also take steps proper handling of Biomedical Waste.

“As per the provisions of the Bio-Medical Waste Management Rules. 2016 as amended to date. notified by Ministry of Environment. Forest and Climate Change. Govt. of India. every institution/ Health Care Facility generating bio-medical waste is required to take all steps to ensure that Bio-Medical Waste is handled without any adverse effect to human health and the environment as per the procedure prescribed under the Rules.” the letter noted
