Summer Heat Linked to Increased Suicide Risk in Young People, Suggests Study

USA: Researchers, after analysing CDC and U.S. Census data in a study, have found that higher summer temperatures were associated with increased suicide rates among late adolescents and young adults.

The findings suggest that extreme heat may have important effects on mental health, potentially contributing to greater psychological distress and suicide risk in vulnerable populations. These results highlight the need for increased awareness, mental health support, and public health interventions during periods of elevated temperatures, particularly for younger individuals.
The findings were published in the American Journal of Psychiatry by Pranav Jayaraman and colleagues from the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center. The study examined the association between ambient temperature and suicide rates among children, adolescents, and young adults in the United States.
Using county-level data from the CDC and U.S. Census Bureau collected between 1980 and 2004, the researchers assessed how changes in average monthly temperature influenced suicide rates among individuals aged 5–24 years. The analysis accounted for factors including precipitation, geographic region, month, year, and county characteristics.
Overall, suicide rates increased by 0.75% for every 1°C rise in average monthly temperature. However, the association was driven by summer months, when the effect of heat was considerably stronger. The greatest vulnerability was observed among individuals aged 15–24 years, whose suicide rates increased by nearly 3% for every 1°C rise in summer temperature. The association was consistent across most regions of the country and did not vary significantly by sex, race, income, education level, or rurality.
Key findings from the study include:
  • Suicide rates among young people increased by 0.75% for every 1°C increase in average monthly temperature.
  • The association was evident primarily during summer and not during other seasons.
  • During summer, suicide rates rose by 2.68% for every 1°C increase in temperature.
  • Individuals aged 15–24 years showed the greatest vulnerability, with a 2.97% increase in suicide rates per 1°C rise in summer temperature.
  • The temperature-suicide relationship was observed across most U.S. regions.
  • No significant differences were identified across demographic or socioeconomic groups.
The authors suggested that neurobiological and environmental factors may make older adolescents and young adults particularly susceptible to the mental health effects of heat. As temperatures rise, heat exposure could become an increasingly important contributor to youth mental health risk.
The study was limited by its reliance on county-level data, potential inaccuracies in measuring individual heat exposure, and its inability to account for factors such as access to air conditioning and housing conditions.
The researchers called for further studies to clarify the mechanisms linking heat and suicide risk and emphasized the need for cooling interventions, climate-informed mental health strategies, and policies to protect young people during extreme heat.
