Specialist Trainings in UK now recognized by MCI
New Delhi: Adding to the qualified specialist pool in the country, the Medical Council of India has granted recognition to the speciality and super-speciality training courses in the UK, thereby allowing candidates with Certificate of Completion of Training issued by certain UK medical organisations to be registered as additional qualifications.
This comes as a relief to thousands of candidates, who after their MBBS had pursued these training programmes in the UK, but with lack of mandate were not allowed to register these specialisations with their respective state medical council. This effectively implied that despite having training in the respective specialisations and even super-specialisations these candidates were not allowed practise as specialists.
Govt. of India, Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, vide Notification dated 07/03/2008 included all postgraduate medical qualifications awarded in USA/UK/Canada/Australia/New Zealand and recognized for enrolment as medical practitioner in the specialty concerned in that country, in the Part-II of Third Schedule to the IMC Act.

Accordingly, on the basis of this Notification and clarification sought from the General Medical Council, United Kingdom, the matter with regard to grant of registration of Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) in different branches as additional qualification, was considered and approved by the Board of Governors at its meeting held on 23rd April, 2019.
The MCI BOG then gave its head-up to the recognition of the CCT trainings and concluded that Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) issued by the Postgraduate Medical Education & Training Board (PGMETB)/General Medical Council (GMC)/Specialists Training Authority of the Medical Royal Colleges (STAMRC), can be considered for registration as additional qualification.
Confirmation to this effect was made, a few months ago by MCI secretary RK vats to the Registrar of the various State Medical Councils, asking them to allow such practitioners to register their additional qualifications
Doctors with a CCT have completed an approved training programme in the UK and are eligible for entry onto the Specialist Register. The General Medical Council, UK has approved and quality assured training programmes in 65 specialties.
