Doctors' wing slams Andhra govt over lower MBBS seat addition

Vijayawada: A doctors' wing has strongly criticised the Andhra Pradesh Government after the state secured only 375 additional MBBS seats for the 2026-27 academic session. alleging that Andhra Pradesh has fallen behind in the latest expansion of undergraduate medical seats approved by the National Medical Commission (NMC).

Referring to the NMC's approval of 9,911 new MBBS seats across the country, the organisation alleged that the state's poor performance has adversely affected opportunities for aspiring medical students and demanded greater accountability from the government.

According to UNI report, the YSRCP-NTR District Doctors Wing has condemned on the Andhra Pradesh Government, terming it ''utterly incompetent'' after Andhra Pradesh students lagged behind in securing undergraduate medical seats for 2026-27.

The YSRCP-NTR District Doctors Wing slammed the Chandrababu Naidu government for what it termed as "dragging the state to a shameful position where even Bihar, considered the most backward state in terms of development indicators, has left Andhra Pradesh far behind in securing undergraduate medical seats for 2026-27".

In a statement here on Tuesday, Professor Dr. Ambati Naga Radhakrishna Yadav, Chairman of the YSRCP - NTR District Doctors Wing, said that out of 9,911 additional MBBS seats approved nationally by the National Medical Commission, Andhra Pradesh could manage a meager 375 seats, while Bihar has galloped ahead with 740 new seats.

Dr. Yadav he termed as the government's "fake propaganda" by stating that even this paltry figure of 375 includes 150 seats from medical colleges that were "conceptualized, funded, and initiated during the revolutionary tenure of former Chief Minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy".

“A government that has not added a single new medical college project of its own is shamelessly parading YSRCP's achievements as its own while pushing the state behind even the most backward states. While progressive states like Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Telangana are racing ahead, Andhra Pradesh is being pushed into the bottom league because this government has completely failed to create infrastructure and ensure NMC compliance,” he said, quotes UNI.
