Assam Gets NMC Nod for Pragjyotishpur Medical College with 50 MBBS Seats

Assam- In an achievement in the healthcare and education sector, Assam recently received approval from the National Medical Commission (NMC) to set up Pragjyotishpur Medical College and Hospital with an intake of 50 MBBS students for the academic year 2025-26.
This medical college has become the second medical college and hospital in Guwahati. It is named after the ancient name of the city, Pragjyotishpur. Spread over a modern campus, the college is expected to strengthen the medical education infrastructure of the state and meet the growing demand for skilled doctors in Assam and neighbouring regions.
In this regard, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma shared a post on ‘X’ formerly Twitter. In the post, the CM wrote, “Assam's 14th Medical College is Born! The National Medical College is Born! The National Medical Council has approved Pragjyotishpur Medical College with 50 MBBS seats for the academic year 2025-26 — a proud milestone in our mission to strengthen healthcare and medical education in the state".
The establishment of Pragjyotishpur Medical College is a part of Assam's aggressive expansion in the medical sector. In the last five years, the state has inaugurated several new institutions to address the shortage of doctors and healthcare professionals.
With more medical colleges, Assam will not only strengthen its local healthcare system but also position itself as an emerging hub for medical education in the Northeast. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma welcomed the approval, calling it a step forward towards the government's vision of expanding medical education and healthcare facilities.
