Dr Bhaskar Gupta takes charge as new Principal of Silchar Medical College and hospital
Silchar: Dr Bhaskar Gupta has been appointed as the new principal of Silchar Medical College and Hospital (SMCH). Previously Dr Babul Bezbaruah served as the principal of the institute.
Dr Gupta previously served as the Superintendent and the Vice Principal of Silchar Medical College and Hospital (SMCH). Dr Bhaskar Gupta was a professor in the Department of Dermatology, SMCH. Since the beginning of the COVID pandemic in 2020, Dr Gupta consistently worked hard to provide patient service.
Former Principal Dr Babul Bezbaruah has been transferred to the newly opened Nalbari Medical College and Hospital. Dr Bezbaruah joined SMCH in 2018 and led his team during the epidemic from the front. Dr Abhijit Swamy has been appointed vice principal, while Dr Biswadeep Choudhury will serve as the new Superintendent. During Dr Bezbaruah's five-year tenure, the institute saw significant infrastructure development at the SMCH, reports The Sentinel.
SMCH has made many significant developments in recent past years. In fact, in March, Assam Minister for Health and Family Welfare Keshab Mahanta announced that a state-of-the-art super speciality hospital will be constructed at the Silchar Medical College and Hospital (SMCH). The confirmation in this regard came from the minister during his visit to the Silchar Cancer Centre on 30th April 2023. The state government has given approval to the proposal to set up a super speciality hospital on the campus of SMCH which will benefit the people of Barak Valley. Meanwhile, the Assam government is also mulling expanding the Silchar Medical College and Hospital (SMCH) to 2000 beds from 806 beds.
The State Government decided to start the colleges with preclinical classes in the vacant buildings of the Ayurvedic College at Jalukbari, Guwahati, with 60 students for Gauhati Medical College and 40 students for Silchar Medical College as a twin college. The construction of the buildings for the Silchar Medical College was started at its permanent site at Ghungoor, Silchar, and the College was inaugurated in its permanent building on 15th August 1968, and thereby the twin got separated. The admission to the MBBS course was 50 students annually. Thereafter, in the year 1977-78, the main hospital building complex was commissioned.
