Bihar to open 2 new medical colleges in January 2026, 200 MBBS seats to be added

Bihar: In a significant boost for the state's medical education sector, Bihar is set to add two new medical colleges by early 2026.
With the addition of these two new colleges, the total number of medical colleges run by the state government will increase to 13. However, these 13 colleges are currently located in only 11 districts of the state. Two new medical colleges and Hospitals will be established in two districts of Bihar, namely Vaishali and Bhojpur.
In this regard, state health department officials announced recently that the medical college and hospital being built in Mahua, Vaishali district, and the Veer Kunwar Singh Medical College and Hospital in Ara, Bhojpur district, will commence operations in January 2026. The construction cost of these two institutions is ₹500 crore and ₹543 crore, respectively.
The official also stated that both medical colleges will have a capacity of 500 beds each. A total of 100 MBBS students will be admitted to these two medical colleges each. These medical colleges, to be built in Bhojpur and Vaishali districts, will be operated in accordance with the rules of the National Medical Commission (NMC). They will primarily offer major facilities such as general medicine, surgery, paediatrics, gynaecology, and intensive care units (ICUs). These two medical colleges and hospitals will provide patients with facilities such as indoor and outdoor treatment, diagnostic tests, and medicines.
In addition, demonstration rooms, a museum, an autopsy block with equipment, and other necessary academic and clinical facilities have been built. Both new colleges have hostel buildings for all students, as well as residential facilities for doctors and staff, report TOI.
Meanwhile, apart from these 13 state government-run institutions, Bihar has nine recognised private medical colleges that offer approximately 1,350 MBBS seats. Admissions to these institutions are based entirely on NEET UG scores and are conducted by the Bihar Combined Entrance Competitive Examination Board (BCECEB).
