Chhattisgarh hikes MBBS intern stipend to Rs 25,000

Raipur: The Chhattisgarh government has approved an increase in the monthly stipend of MBBS interns in government medical colleges from Rs 15,900 to Rs 25,000 per month.

The revised stipend will come into effect from October 1, 2026, according to an order issued by the Medical Education Department on September 24, 2026.

The order stated that the decision was taken in response to a proposal submitted by the Directorate of Medical Education (DME) on August 4, 2026.

“The State Government hereby grants approval for revision of the stipend currently being received by MBBS interns of Government Medical Colleges in Chhattisgarh to ₹25,000 per month,” the order stated.

Further, it added, "In this regard, concurrence has been provided by the Finance Department vide Computer No. 465396 dated 24/09/2026."

In August 2026, the state government had assured MBBS interns that their stipend would be increased from Rs 15,900 to Rs 25,000. Following a meeting with Health Minister Shyam Bihari Jaiswal and a written assurance from the authorities, the interns called off their protest.

With the government now approving the revised stipend for MBBS interns, the stipend and salary-related demands of junior resident doctors in the state remain pending.

Medical Dialogues had reported that in protest over low stipends and salaries, junior resident doctors in the state boycotted Outpatient Department (OPD) services from September 21.

Seeking a stipend hike that they said had been pending for a long time, the doctors submitted an application to the Chief Minister and Health Minister and announced a phased protest if their 17-point demands were not met.

The doctors raised 17 demands, including an increase in the stipend of MBBS interns and revision of the salaries and honorariums of postgraduate residents, bonded junior residents and senior residents, along with other pending issues related to medical services and doctors.
