Doctors at GCS Hospital remove 13 kg tumour from ovary of elderly patient
Ahmedabad: The doctors of GCS Hospital have surgically removed a 13 kg tumor from the ovary of a 66-year-old woman. Though it was a noncancerous tumour, the patient was old and has several comorbidities which made the case quite challenging.
The hospital has recently issued a statement stating that the woman admitted at GCS Hospital was resuscitated by removing a 13-kg tumor from her ovaries. As per the statement, the patient's stomach ached, she faced difficulty in eating and drinking. The tumor in the ovary was getting bigger day by day and the size of the abdomen was increasing.
In addition to this, she was also feeling more bloated and had abdominal pain. The gynecology department at GCS Hospital started treating the patient immediately after her admission and advised her to undergo surgery after a CT scan revealed a tumor.
Associate professor, Gynaec - oncologist, endoscopic surgeon, Obst. & Gyn department, GCS hospital, Dr. Divyesh Panchal decided to remove the tumor by operation after making the necessary reports. The Gynaec team including Dr. Divyesh Panchal, Dr. Shikha Chandrawat, Dr. Nitin Gambhava, Dr. Saksha Dholakia, and Dr. Misbah Mansuri treated the patient in collaboration with the Department of Anesthesia and the Department of Pathology.
Finally, the patient underwent a hysterectomy in the facility. Dr. Divyesh Panchal and a team of doctors operated for three consecutive hours to successfully remove the tumor.
Dr. Panchal said that the tumor, which weighed about 13 kg, made it impossible for a female patient with swollen abdomen to get up, sit and walk. Suspecting cancer, GCS contacted the gynecology department at the hospital. Getting an operation in a private hospital was not affordable for a woman. But GCS Hospital got the benefit of free treatment under Ayushman Bharat Yojana. The tumour was successfully removed after a three-hour operation. The size of this tumour was 32 cm.
As per the statement, in the last three years, GCS Hospital has successfully treated more than 100 gynecological cancer patients with more than 56 patients undergoing surgery. Most of these patients availed free treatment under Ayushman Bharat Yojana. GCS Hospital is also currently treating cancers like mouth-throat, breast, lung, uterus, esophagus, thyroid, blood cancer etc.
Dr. Panchal told Medical Dialogues, " In my 11-year long career, I have not seen such a big tumor. It took us more than 2 hours to complete the surgery and we are still awaiting the final reports." He further added, " The patient also had comorbidities like diabetes, thyroid and she had hypertension also."
Dr. Panchal appreciated the work of the anesthetist who also contributed greatly in conducting the operation.
