Two GMERS Gotri Medical Students Drown in Narmada Canal
Gujarat- In an unfortunate incident, two third-year medical students of Gotri GMERS College drowned while taking a walk in the Narmada canal at Ankodia in Vadodara district on Wednesday, police said.
The two students have been identified as Prem Madam (21) and Aditya Ramakrishna (20), hailing from Jamnagar and Surat, respectively. The incident occurred on Wednesday afternoon, when both of them went for a walk along with two other friends on the banks of the Narmada Canal in Ankodia, Gujarat.
The students were bathing in the canal when Prem and Aditya drowned. One of the four students managed to escape and informed the police soon after the incident. Police and fire brigade teams reached the spot and started rescue operations.
According to a media report by the IndianExpress, officials from the Vadodara Taluka Police Station said that the two friends reportedly “slipped and fell into the canal”, and are feared to have drowned.
"Both students had gone near the canal on Wednesday afternoon. It is unclear whether they were attempting to enter the canal to take a bath, but they slipped while walking along it. Both bodies have been recovered and sent to Gotri Medical College in Vadodara," an official from the Vadodara taluka police station said.
Meanwhile, the Vadodara Taluka Police Station has registered a case of accidental death, while the fire department has recovered the bodies of both students and brought them to GMERS Gotri Hospital for further processing.
Dr Rathore, a senior college official, confirmed the identities of the students and said the college community was deeply shocked by the incident. The families of the deceased who live outside Vadodara have been informed and have left for the city.
A month ago, Medical Dialogues had earlier reported a similar case from Odisha's Angul district, where a medical student drowned in Derjang Dam. The deceased has been identified as Rulu Pradhan, a resident of Tainshi village. He was studying at a medical college in Hyderabad. He had come to his home in Odisha on vacation and decided to go to Derjang Dam to take a bath. He was accompanied by his friends to the location.
