Depressed over obesity, MBBS student commits suicide in Mangaluru
“I wanted to complete my MBBS course, but my obesity has come in the way. My efforts to lose weight have gone in vain and the development has caused me depression,” her suicide note read.
Mangaluru: In a tragic incident, an MBBS student committed suicide by jumping from the sixth floor of the ladies' hostel building in Mangaluru city, Dakshina Kannada district of Karnataka. The medico reportedly committed suicide after being depressed over obesity for a long time.
The deceased has been identified as 20-year-old MBBS student at a private medical college and hailed from Athani town in Belagavi district.
According to an IANS news report, the circumstances surrounding her death, as reported by the police, suggest that she jumped from the A J Medical College hostel building on Monday morning.
Preliminary investigations indicate that Prakruthi was grappling with depression related to her body weight, and this struggle is believed to have led her to take her own life.
During the investigation, police recovered a suicide note, in which the medico claimed that she took the extreme step after growing tired of life. Police said that the student claimed responsibility for her death, adds IANS.

A case of unnatural death has been registered and an investigation into the case is underway.
The number of suicides among medical students is increasing every month. Medical dialogues team in March this year reported that altogether 119 medical students committed suicide and 1,166 students left medical colleges and institutes in the last five years.
This information was shared by NMC while responding to an RTI query raised by Vivek Pandey, a social and political activist. He had sought to know from the apex medical regulator about the number of students who committed suicide during the last 5 years, and also the number of colleges who left the colleges and institutions during that period.
Referring to the data submitted by 512 medical colleges in the country, the Apex medical education regulatory body, NMC further revealed that 64 UG and 55 MD/MS students committed suicides in the last five years.
