Surgical napkin left inside woman during c-section; action recommended against gynaecologist, nursing officer

Medical Negligence
Khargone: In a shocking incident, a surgical napkin was allegedly left inside a woman's abdomen during a Cesarean delivery at a district hospital in Madhya Pradesh. Action has been recommended against the gynaecologist and a nursing officer.
The District Collector has ordered an inquiry into the matter. According to news reports, the woman, who has been identified as Manisha, a resident of Selda village, was on March 16 admitted to the government hospital in Bhikangaon after she developed labour pain and was later referred to the district hospital.
As per the inquiry report, the matter has been confirmed as medical negligence on the part of the gynaecologist and nursing officer. Therefore, based on the findings of the investigation, a recommendation for action against both individuals has been sent to the Health Commissioner of Bhopal.
Speaking to TOI, Khargone Collector Bhavya Mittal said, “The woman underwent a second surgery at a private hospital in Indore, where the surgical napkin was removed. Since she had not undergone any other surgical procedure in between, the inquiry ruled out any external factors or conspiracy, clearly attributing the lapse to the Caesarean operation performed at the district hospital”.
On March 17, she gave birth to a baby girl via a Cesarean section performed by the doctor. She was discharged from the hospital on March 21, but the abdominal pain persisted. When her condition began to deteriorate, the family took her to MY Hospital in Indore. There, she was admitted to a private hospital, where she underwent a few tests. Subsequently, tests revealed the presence of a foreign object in his abdomen.
On March 31, she underwent a second surgery, during which a surgical napkin was removed. However, after the matter came to light, widespread outrage erupted over the incident, following which the Collector ordered an inquiry into the matter.
