Awaiting NMC visit, Start of Pune Municipal Medical College likely to be delayed
Pune: The start of the long-awaited Pune Municipal Corporation's medical college is most likely to defer further as the proposal has not yet secured final approval from National Medical Commission (NMC).
The medical college will receive final approval after National Medical Commission (NMC) pays a visit to the Medical College to ensure proper infrastructure and other facilities and gives its nod to the college.
As per a recent media report by Times of India, the NMC visit was supposed to take place in April but it got delayed. "The chances of the visit happening are less. The new wave of Covid-19 has impacted the schedule. The final visit has not happened yet," said a senior official of PMC.
The process of forming a trust for 'Bharatratna Atal Bihari Vajpayee Medical College' has already been completed by the civic body. They have formed an educational trust comprising elected members of PMC. PMC requested NMC's approval for the civic-run Medical College in December 2020. PMC was supposed to send the proposal for the Municipal Medical College by November 30th.
However, due to the pandemic, the process got delayed and the deadline for the proposal was extended up to December 15th. As per the PMC officials, after sending a proposal to the commission, authorities formed a committee to monitor the ground level preparations for the college. The college can run full-fledged after securing final approval from NMC. The civic body initially planned to start accepting students for the first batch from the next academic year in June or July.
Previously, Medical Dialogues reported that in August 2019, the PMC Standing Committee gave the approval to form a trust to run the medical college at Rs 622 crore. The college will be set up on a 10-acre plot and named after late Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, officials said. There are 595 posts of doctors, nurses, and other necessary staff proposed for the college.
