Maha: Impersonator posing as BJP state president demands Rs 25 lakh from Doctor; arrested for extortion

Pune: A doctor attached to Lokmanya Hospital recently raised alarm and led to an arrest of an impersonator posing as the personal assistant to Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) State President, Chandrakant Patil, seeking Rs 25 lakh as donation for the treatment of COVID patients.

As per recent media reports, on July 18, the medical practitioner received a call from an unidentified person. The man claimed to be Chandrakant Patil's PA and demanded money for the welfare of poor people who have been hit by the COVID-19 pandemic. The doctor was threatened to pay him 25 lakh or to face serious consequences.

The person also reportedly said that he would send a man from the Parvati area to collect the money and the doctor must obey his orders and hand over the money to the said person without making any further questions.

Following the threat, the complainant spoke to the BJP leader and on realising that someone had falsely impersonated Patil''s staff, he lodged a complaint at Nigdi police station, reports PTI

Thereafter, he filed a complaint with the Nigdi police station.

"But when we checked with the politician, we found that he had made no such call. The accused also threatened to harm us physically if we don't give up the money," the doctor told Mumbai Mirror.

The accused has now been arrested under sections 266 (possession of false weight or measure) 387 (extortion), 501 (defamation), and 34 (common intention) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) by the Nidgi police. The arrest was made within 24 hours of registering the complaint.

Commenting on the matter, Additional Commissioner of Police Ramakant Pokle told the Mirror, "The accused was booked for impersonating Patil and claim the money would be utilized to treat poor coronavirus patients. The arrest was made on Thursday morning and further investigations are on."

Further investigation in the matter is ongoing.
