Sion Hospital Assistant Dean arrested for allegedly trying to sell MD Pediatrics seat for Rs 50 lakh
Mumbai: The Assistant Dean of Lokmanya Tilak General Hospital (Sion Hospital) has been arrested on Wednesday for allegedly taking a bribe of rupees 50 lakh from an MBBS graduate and duping her on the pretext of granting her PG medical admission to the MD Paediatrics course.
The medico realized that she was duped after noting that even after taking the money, the accused did not give any seat to her. After this, she approached the police and filed a case of cheating against the assistant Dean of the institute.
The 54-year-old accused assistant dean was arrested under the IPC section 420 but he was admitted to Sion hospital after it was found that he was facing health complications due to hypertension.
According to the police report, the 28-year-old MBBS female doctor came in touch with a man in August who claimed that he could help her in getting admission for a post-graduation course from the Government quota and also stated that seats were available in Sion hospital. The doctor wanted to pursue her post-graduation in the MD Paediatrics at Lokmanya Tilak Municipal Medical college and she agreed to his proposal.
The duo then visited the assistant dean at Sion hospital and had a conversation with him who allegedly explained the whole admission procedure to them. The man submitted the relevant documents of the doctor and confirmed that the admission has been fixed.
The Freepress Journal reports that on August 25th the father and the brother of the MBBS doctor met the man near BYL Nair Hospital and they inquired him about the progress of the admission process and also sought details from him. However, when he started giving ambiguous answers, they broke the deal. The father and the brother of the doctor instead approached the assistant dean at the hospital and questioned about the admission process.
As per the FIR, the assistant dean then demanded a bribe of rupees 1.5 crores to confirm the admission. When the family members of the doctor informed him about their incapability of arranging the money, the doctor allegedly gave a discount and the deal was finalized at rupees 50 lakh.
The MBBS doctor alleged that till September 30th, they allegedly paid him the whole amount of 50 lakh. While they paid almost 20 lacs in cash, the rest was delivered via bank transfer. Even after paying the amount, the medico could not get any admission and she contacted the accused asking for the return of the money. The assistant Dean assured her that he would return the money but he did not initiate any refund, she alleged.
The woman doctor then approached Sion police and lodged a complaint against the assistant dean.
"During the course of the inquiry, we ascertained that he had taken Rs 50 lakh from the complainant, after which the assistant dean was arrested," read the press note issued by the Mumbai police late on Wednesday. After that he was was taken by the police from his Doctor's quarters at Nair hospital in Mumbai Central and he was brought to the police station for inquiry. But was later taken to Sion Hospital where he was detected with hypertension.
Speaking to The Indian Express, the additional municipal commissioner informed that the civic body had earlier also approached Mumbai police three months ago to initiate a probe against the assistant dean. He told the daily, "We had received a complaint that he was extorting money on the pretext of providing a medical seat to students. When the police could not find any evidence against him, we ordered indefinite suspension last month."
Civic officials said an internal inquiry is underway against the Assistant Dean. Officials said that they suspect that the accused may have taken money from several other aspiring medical students.
