Unfortunate: Mumbai doctor succumbs to COVID-19
Mumbai: In an unfortunate incident, a senior female doctor attached with civic-run Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Hospital in Kalwa succumbed to COVID-19. This is the third death of a doctor in Thane due to Covid-19
The 49-year-old doctor passed away on June 14, 2020, (Sunday). The deceased doctor was diabetic and, therefore, was posted in the tuberculosis out-patient department instead of COVID duty. However, she soon contracted the virus.
Expressing over the heartbreaking incident, Dr Pratibha Sawant, CSMH Dean told PTI that over 20 doctors and 15 interns have tested positive for novel coronavirus at the facility, many of whom have recovered and resumed work.
The loss of yet another doctor falling prey to the virus has indeed added to the plight of a doctor shortage in the state. Meanwhile, according to HT, two more medical professionals were tested positive for the fatal Coronavirus in Thane lately.
Medical Dialogues had earlier reported that Thane Municipal Corporation had sent a request to the Maharashtra government to provide 100 doctors and 300 nurses from Kerala to contain the novel coronavirus outbreak here.

"The doctor who lost her life on Sunday was diabetic, so she was not on COVID duty. She was posted in the tuberculosis out-patient department. We are deeply saddened by this news as one more amongst us has succumbed to Covid-19 as a warrior," Dr Dinkar Desai, president, Indian Medical Association's Thane chapter told HT.
A doctor at the Kalwa hospital told the daily, "More than 60 healthcare professionals including doctors and staff within Kalwa hospital have tested positive till now. In some cases, the staffer has tested positive for the second time as well, which is very dangerous."
A Thane Municipal Corporation release issued on June 16 evening stated that 167 people have died of the infection so far, comprising 109 men and 58 women. It said 112 new cases were reported on Tuesday in TMC limits, taking the COVID-19 count here to 5,415. A total of 24 doctors within Thane are being treated for Covid-19 currently.
